HIV
Testing
Testing Information
HIV testing is done by trained
staff using the OraQuick Advance test. This means that the test is done orally, not by using blood or a needle. The actual
test takes about 20 minutes with pre-counseling and post-counseling
being a part of the procedure. The test is 99.9% accurate.
The test does not check for any other sexually transmitted
diseases (STDs) but NDI staff can refer individuals to an
STD clinic. HIV testing is free.
Testing Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:30
AM to 4:00 PM. Testing is conducted at our HIV/AIDS Outreach Office located
at: 4466 Elvis Presley Blvd., Suite 310 - 901-346-5497. (Map)
We recommend calling our office prior
to coming in order to make sure a testing counselor will be
available.
Test Results
There
are three possible results:
- Negative
means no HIV antibodies were detected at this time. However
in some cases HIV infection cannot be ruled out completely.
Someone who has participated in risky behavior (such as
sex without a condom or shared needles) within the past
3 months should be tested again in 3-6 months.
- Preliminary
positive means there is a high probability that
as person has HIV, but it will be necessary to have a confirmatory
test to be sure. This confirmatory test takes several days
to get the final results.
- Invalid
means there was a problem with the testing equipment and
another will have to be given.
